An automatic sprinkler system is a series of underground and overhead piping designed by fire protection engineering standards.\u00a0 The system is connected to a water supply such as a storage tank or municipal water supply. The system includes a controlling valve, a series of sprinkler heads, and a device for actuating an alarm when the system is in operation.\u00a0 The system is usually activated by heat from a fire and discharges water over the fire area.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

    • Plan and practise your escape plan together.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
    • Be sure your building manager posts evacuation plans in high-traffic areas, such as lobbies.<\/li>\r\n
    • Learn the sound of your building\u2019s fire alarm and post-emergency numbers near all telephones.<\/li>\r\n
    • Know who is responsible for maintaining the fire safety systems.<\/li>\r\n
    • Make sure nothing blocks these devices and promptly report any sign of damage or malfunction to the building management.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

      DO NOT PANIC IN N THE EVENT OF A HIGHRISE FIRE EMERGENCY<\/b><\/h4>\r\n

      • Do not assume anyone else has already called the fire department.<\/li>\r\n
      • Immediately call your local emergency number.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
      • Early notification of the fire department is important.<\/li>\r\n
      • The dispatcher will ask questions regarding the emergency.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
      • Stay calm and give the dispatcher the information they request.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

        CHECK IF THE DOOR IS WARM TO THE TOUCH<\/h4>\r\n

        \r\n
        • Before you try to leave your apartment or office, feel the door with the back of your hand.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
        • If the door feels warm to the touch, do not attempt to open it.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
        • Stay in your apartment or office.<\/li>\r\n
        • Stuff the cracks around the door with towels, rags, bedding or tape and cover vents to keep smoke out.<\/li>\r\n
        • If there is a phone in the room where you are trapped, call the fire department again to tell them exactly where you are located.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
        • Do this even if you can see the fire apparatus on the street below.<\/li>\r\n
        • Wait at a window and signal for help with a flashlight or by waving a sheet.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
        • If possible, open the window at the top and bottom, but do not break it, you may need to close the window if smoke rushes in.<\/li>\r\n
        • Be patient. Rescuing all the occupants of a highrise building can take several hours.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

          NOW IF THE DOOR IS NOT WARM TO THE TOUCH<\/h4>\r\n

          \r\n
          • If you do attempt to open the door, brace your body against the door while staying low to the floor and slowly open it.<\/li>\r\n
          • What you are doing is checking for the presence of smoke or fire in the hallway.<\/li>\r\n
          • If there is no smoke in the hallway or stairwells, follow your building\u2019s evacuation plan.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
          • If you don\u2019t hear the building\u2019s fire alarm, pull the nearest fire alarm \u201cpull station\u201d while exiting the floor.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
          • If you encounter smoke or flames on your way out, immediately return to your apartment or office.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

            AFTER A HIGHRISE FIRE EMERGENCY<\/h4>\r\n

            \r\n
            • Once you are out of the building, STAY OUT! Do not go back inside for any reason.<\/li>\r\n
            • Tell the fire department if you know of anyone trapped in the building.<\/li>\r\n
            • Only enter when the fire department tells you it is safe to do so.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

              MAINTAIN AND INSTALL WORKING SMOKE ALARMS<\/h4>\r\n

              • No matter where you live, always install smoke alarms on every level\u00a0<\/li>\r\n
              • Test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.<\/li>\r\n
